“The Wonderful Festivity of Vigan City”

Every town, city or province had to celebrate it’s own occasions like fiesta for such a reason, but to some, it’s a way of honoring or thanksgiving to someone or something. But, to some it’s really a part of customs and traditions for community life celebration.

The Vigan City Fiesta is held every January 25. It is celebrated during the feast day of the conversion of St. Paul the Apostle. In honor to him as the patron saint, this fiesta was celebrated before his conversion, St. Paul was known as Saul, a zealous persecutor of Christians. After he was touched by a personal encounter with Jesus Christ on his way to Damascus, his name was changed to Paul and he endured a lot of hardships and danger to spread the word of God to far places.

The Vigan City Fiesta usually lasts for several days. It includes within the period the celebration of the anniversary of the cityhood of Vigan, which is commemorated every January 27. Bigueños from all over the country and even abroad return to Vigan, as it is the custom of Filipinos to return to their hometown to join their family and friends in celebration of this fiesta.

In my memories, I remembered the events that what was happened during this fiesta. The streets are full of people watching the street dancing along the way, cultural shows, parades, foods fairs, arts and crafts exhibits, as well as carnivals, different clothes sections, and any others just to show that Vigan City Fiesta is celebrated.

The celebration is really an amazing one, coz it will be a great event, but due to this pandemic, then it’s so sad to note that it will not push through on the said date, but our officials are planning to go on with it, coz' it is really important to be celebrated. Arising numbers of positive residents are on the go and we are now in the position of Level 3. Thus, it is really a hindrance for the celebration of this fiesta.

For me, if it will materialize that if the government officials will still continue to celebrate this such event, then all government and health protocols must be strictly implemented to avoid the transmission of the virus. But, it’s not as we expected to see as we always did in the past, because of the pandemic that we are facing. For me, it’s really hard that the Vigan City Fiesta must to be celebrated, even it is just in our own ways, to show our respect and devotions to our custom and traditions.
